Compositions Series — Conceptual Study Works

The Compositions Series is an ongoing body of original artworks through which Roberta Boffo explores and expands the foundations of her mark-making practice. Created entirely by hand using ink and brushes on paper, these one-of-a-kind works originate as introspective studies, yet are conceived as complete, collectible artworks in their own right.

In this series, the intuitive symbols, face-like forms, and recurring visual gestures that often appear in miniature within Boffo’s most intricate drawings are explored at a larger, more open scale. What is usually woven into dense, immersive surfaces is explored here at a larger, more open scale, allowing each mark to exist with greater clarity and presence.

Many of the compositions subtly resemble faces or figures, often revealing themselves gradually. As the viewer shifts position, new expressions and forms emerge, inviting prolonged observation and a more intuitive mode of looking. This shifting perception reflects the organic, subconscious nature of Boffo’s visual language.

While rooted in a process of exploration, the Compositions Series offers a rare and intimate view into the artist’s creative universe — revealing the gestures, movements, and symbolic structures that underpin her most complex works, while standing as a coherent and compelling body of work with lasting collectible value.
